BDP (website) succeeded the Democratic Society Party (DTP) in 2008, following the closure of the latter party for its alleged connections with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The BDP called for the PKK to disarm. The party has observer status at the Socialist International, supports Turkey's application to European Union membership, same-sex marriages in Turkey, an anti-discrimination law to protect LGBT people and also wants the Government of Turkey to recognize the Armenian genocide.
Klaus-Michael Schneider, 28 April 2014The flag of BDP (photo) is yellow with the party's emblem in the middle.
The emblem of the party is a yellow disc fimbriated green, charged in the middle with a red and green tree. Beneath the tree are green initials "BDP". Above the party's name is written in black letters forming an arch. The yellow, red and green colours are those of Kurdish flags.
